We started in a natural state and we have evolved into the society of today, man has done evil things, and man has done good things. Man is both good and evil...but it all that depends on how you look at it. If a man has good moral, he will do more good than evil. It just depends...

well i have no clue, cause really depends on your parents, if your parents are evil then you have a 98.8% chance of being evil.If you have two nice parents then you will most likely be made fun of in life and become successful in life unlike all the mean people cause they will be to busy making fun of people. Im voting for myself in the other category

Travis said...

It's a matter of opinion. I really don't have any idea. I think that how you are raised is how you will turn out.

Man, by his nature is evil, and can do nothing of himself for good. Man has fallen from who they were meant to be and stained by original sin.

starzz said...

we are born innocent, a clean slate. The world is full of bad things and society uses you as its play dough ball and does with you what it wants, unless you are a rock that does not roll. So in the natural state we are all good, its what you let society make you into, that decides if you are good or evil.

Chelsie Gausman said...

I believe that it depends on how you are raised if you are in a good or evil state. Also however strong your morals are is whether you will lean toward good or evil...man has his or her own choice to decide what path they want to take...and it's up to them...no one has to tell them

The general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioral traits of humankind, regarded as shared by all humans.

This is just the definition. my opinion is the intellect of all humans in the world from the beginning of time.

Ben Waugh said...

I do agree with Devin. Man is both good and evil. The situation a human is raised in my change your perspective of whats good or evil. Charles Manson and I have different views on what is good and what is evil. I also think this question shows your out look on life. I choose to be an optimist and there for say that man is inherently good. A man does not hurt others because he was born. Show me a new born baby that does not smile and is happy and i will say humans are born bad.

Bryan G. said...

I think that man by nature is evil, by nature we generally want to take the easy way out, we find it easier to cheat and cut corners than to genuinely work for something. I believe that you can overcome you're first instinct if you have good morals.

Shelbi said...

I believe that the human was made to sin. Perfectionism of all man kind would be an inanely crazy world. So with that being said, man in his natural state is evil. With the society we live in, it is hard to walk a straight line and have no evil in your brain. Although some men have the morals to help them through the twists that make them want to be evil, others have a hard time following their beliefs. It just depends on your beliefs and morals of your personal soul. But every man has evil and it is up to oneself on how they handle it and show it to others.

Anonymous said...

It depends on the man and how he was raised because people often learn from the actions of their parents. It also depends on their morals. By looking at the choices a man makes and by looking at his morals it will help show if his natural state is good or evil.

Sallad said...

I believe each man starts in a neutral state and through out his life becomes good or evil it depends on surroundings and up-bringing. Example: Hitler's childhood was a little twisted and dealt with death, and he knew mostly only rejection. While Winston Churchill's life was pampered and fairly easy.

Patrick said...

i think that people are naturally good but in our society i think we act evil because we all think we are better than everyone else

Unknown said...

i do not think we are naturally good or evil, i believe it depends on how you were raised and your ambitions, goals and determination in life.

Ben Waugh said...

I do not agree with Dallas, A person may be born neutral, but their situation growing up is not the only that makes them who they are. I see an inherent goodness. John Lennon for example had his mother choose to give him to his aunt, grew up in poverty, had his mom run over as a teenager, his uncle die as a child, band manager kill himself. He was a violent man, but he was inherently good. A man without a good nature born into him would have simply given up and become a mugger, and abuser. WHen he wrote songs like Love me Do, Imagine Etc....

tator said...

I think its equal, because we hurt the environment, and dont think we do.

danielle said...

Man is both good and evil. Everyone has good and bad thoughts. Thoughts don't make a person though; it is what that person chooses to act on that makes them either good or bad. Man is not all good or all bad. It takes both kinds of people to make a society.

Brennen Clouse said...

In my personal opinion I think that man, in his natural state, tends to be more evil than good. On top of this opinion, I would also like to add that certain things make us this way. For example, I believe that our society today turns us more evil than good. Naturally, I think we are born with evil tendencies and are taught to be good. When you are a baby, your most natural time, you have no idea what is right or wrong so either is fine. You learn the difference based on how you grow into adulthood.

Whitney said...

I think that it all depends on how you were raised. I agree with Brennen on how he said that with today society it's hard to be more good than evil. You learn mostly from your parents and what life style you grew up with. Each person makes their own choices and with that determines if you are more good or evil.

Freeman said...

by nature i believe that man is good. but though their life situations make them evil. or they may stay good. it all depends on what happens through their own life.

Freeman said...

and SPARKLES wants to say:
it's easier for a good man to do evil than for an evil man to do good.

Anonymous said...

i think it depends on how a person is raised by their family, and friends, and what kinds of things have happend, if allot of bad things happens to someone it can make them evil, and have allot of hatred, but if they have loving family and friends, and good guidance then they will probably be good

Anonymous said...

I think when we are born we are innocent, obviously, because we just came out of our mothers womb and haven't had to deal with temptation.. haha... As we grow older to the point of making decisions on our own, society makes us naturally evil rather than good. We have the choice on how to live our lives but nobody is perfect. As sparkles says, it is easier to do evil rather than good. Therefore, we tend to waver on the evil side of things. Devin states this very well...

Andrew said...

I believe that humans in our natural state, having not been corrupted by our society yet and just living to survive... were good. We are inventors and have made ourselves the way we are today... but I believe that once apon a time we were good for the most part. We did what we needed to do to survive... but you could make the point that we are evil because all we do is destroy everything and kill our own race and everything else... but if you look at the chain of life isn't that what all animals do, all compete against one another and kill what they have to in order to survive.

Erika G said...

I agree with some of the others that it depends on how you were raised. However, just because you were raised a certain way doesn't mean you can't make your own decisions. It is really up to ones self if they want to be "good or evil."

Clay Schilling said...

I do believe that it has a lot to do with how you are raised and what is put in front of you to see as a child. If you see only good you will tend to be good but if all you are exposed to evil you will tend to turn evil. So in a natural state with no news the human would be good because there is nothing to corrupt the mind.

Taylor said...

I believe that everyone is born a sinner. Therefore, we are born evil. It is in human nature to sin. But, each individual decides whether or not to live an evil life. If a person's morals and Faith are strong, they would tend to do more good than evil. People are by human nature evil, but they have control over if they keep it that way...

Ben Waugh said...

I guess i can narrow down my opinion a bit more. I guess i feel like my opinion is more "Romantic" I am now going to quote the Rousseau page,..."Romantics prefer feeling to thought, more specifically emotion to calculation" I guess i feel like humans are innately good in feeling, they don't naturally feel hate. The will soon develop the thoughts of hate, through their environment. I feel that the choice of good or evil, through thought, is the choice of the individual with influence from situation, parents, society, and religion.

esam said...

It all depends on how you were raised. If you were raised to not be evil then you will be evil because, you don't know the difference between right and wrong. If you are raised to be good then you will know right from wrong.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Taylor completely. Humans aren't born saints. They can become them only if they choose to do so.

Anonymous said...

I don't agree with those who think that it depends on how you're raised. You're not answering the question at all. The question is:Is man in his natural state, good or evil? I believe we have to determine what our human nature is like at birth. We don't acquire more human nature as we grow up. I believe that we are by nature evil.

Anonymous said...

The true fact is that any man can be good or evil in his natural state. But, the fact is what will the do with that power. Everyone has there own choice of how they use that.

Linnsey said...

Everyone is born good and pure, i believe, but i do agree that as you grow in this world today there are a ton of things to turn you evil. Each individual has their own mind and they can decide what they want to do with their lives.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Erika's comment!

Hector said...

I believe that you are either good or evil in the way you were raised. After you are raised, its up to the individual if they want to live i life of no good or if you want to be good person.

Brooke said...

I believe man in his natural state is born good by human nature, for example if you see a child get hit by a car by human nature you immediately respond to the accident and go help. But it is our choices we make as humans to whether we want to lead a good or evil lifestyle. If a man is well disciplined and has strong values and morals he would probably tend to lead a more superior lifestyle than to that if someone who did not.

Brianna said...

Man in his natural state, with no outside influences, is usually good. It is only society and other influences that cause Man to become evil. I also beleive how you were raised has some to do with it but it is not the only factor in determining whether you will be good or evil. You may have great parents but personal decisions can lead you to evil, just as well as you could have evil parents and personal decisions can lead you to living a good ethical life. It's all about your personal decisions and how easily you are swayed by outside factors and influences. Man chooses his path towards good or evil, and always has the ability to turn in the other direction.

Nelson said...

I think that when we were born we were born with a clean slate therefore we are good. As we evolved we found more ways of corrupting our natural state. Therefore we are both.

Duell said...

I think that man has both evil and good in them some people just have more of one than the other. I have never seen a person just evil or just good person everybody has had both. And alot of it to me is that it is how you are raised from you were really young.

rory"baseball"kling said...

I think that when everyone is born they have some good and evil in them, but as they grow up and mature they establish either more evil or more good. But at a certain degree every man has a little good inside them, because if somebody is in need of help somebody will help them. So everybody has both good and evil inside them its just how they present it to the world.

Julica said...

I really don't know, but i guess you are good and innocent. Until you are introduced or surrounded by evil things or things that make you turn evil.

Matt said...

I'm not sure how to answer this question, i dont think man is born good or evil, there just born, it's the life choices we make, its how we are raised, it all depends on life and its role. But if i had too choose, i'd say good.

Matt said...

i forgot im supposed to give details or something, well, yea i said good right? hmmm lets see, yea umm, yea, we're born good cause first off we didnt do anything bad i suppose and if you dont believe in that whole natural sin thing or whatever i guess we're born pure, so yea thats two!! so im good, its all good.

little n.b. said...

Good and evil because like devin said it depends how you look at it. Some peoples nature is eviil and others are good depending how you are raised also.

Danny.Aguirre said...

Well it really depends on how you see it and which faith you believe in. on some parts different religions believe that when we are born that we are full of sin. and thats why we are baptized. and other religions believe that god isn't there that he is not there leader or creator . i thing that god doesn't care about religion as long as you believe in god. so therefore you are born neutral. you are not good or evil but in life you have decisions to mold wether your good or bad. and yes i agree that todays world makes it harder to believe.

Melissa said...

I think we were born innocent, so naturally no man isn't evil. It is all in how one progresses through life.

Cassie said...

I think it is how your parent raised you on how you see good and bad.But it is your choice to be good or bad.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Taylor, i think we are born with sin.. we can decide how to lead our lives and each can make their own decisions.

Shayla Matthews said...

I think all people are born with no sin, as you grow up, depending on how you go through life, determines if you're good or bad. Everyone has the right to make their own decisions and make the right choices. Not all people are perfect though, we all make mistakes sometimes.

after the heated discussion that we had in class today, i realized that it all depends on the way you interpret "good and evil" some people think that things are evil when others think that it is good, and vise verses. your OPINION is going to be different than others that is why it is your OPINION! and everyone is entitled to their own OPINION! So really everyone is answering the question, even though they might be looking at it different, that is their opinion!

Basically, you are born an innocent being. You, as a infant, cannot decide right then and there whether you will be "evil" or "good". I believe that as you grow older and mature you guide yourself towards the lifestyle you wish to lead. No more. No less. It is simply your choice.

natashia said...

I think we start out good, I also think the people around us and the things that happen in our lives can affect us and cause us to go down the wrong path and be considered evil.

ok i have a new comment, i like what sam said in class yesterday about how you start off with a clean slate and you choose whether you are good or evil! that is the total solution.

Brittaney Medrano said...

I really don't know i guess its just how you were raised and born.

Anonymous said...

I know we can rule out man being born good. If this were so, where did evil come from? In our class people argued that their evil parents raised them this way. But this answer is inadequate. There has to be a start as to where evil comes from. Somewhere or another evil began. One girl tried to head me off by saying that Adam and Eve were born good but chose to commit evil, which is true. However, if all men were born good, evil would have cancelled out a long time ago especially when our society dictates us toward good.

Anonymous said...

We see in the Bible that man in his nature is born evil, or bad. We have original sin, something that gears us toward being evil. If this weren't so then why did the Gospel writers have to emphasize that Jesus was sinless? Because it was common knowledge that we are born sinners. This is the entire essence of Christian salvation history, that man is born evil, and can not live a life that is perfectly good. No one, not David, who is the saintliest figure of the Old Testament, nor Solomon who posessed more wisdom than any other human being has ever had could do it. If we were born good then more than one person could have lived a perfect life. And if we are by nature good then why did Jesus die?

Man in his natural state is neither good nor evil but simply in the middle able to be swayed both ways. They could be good by surrounding positive influences or evil by surrounding negative influences. The state of someone being good or evil is also influenced by the factors that make them who they are, one being their personality. Their personality will attract them to the things that are good or evil.
It all just depends on what that one person is born into rather than being born a certain way.

so i dont think that this is really meaning "when you are baby" i think that it is meaning when you are separated from everyone else and you yourself are evaluated with out the influence of the outside world...

I agree with Starzz.. =) Although my previous comment stated "baby".

Melissa said...

well, I think that this discussion should be religion free because there is people who have none or are athiest so these thoughts will be completely negated. I have learned that bringing religion into something to make a point unless the point is about religion that it is pointless. People will then write off your opinion as you just believe that because you read the bible and believe it. So, not talking to anyone in particular *cough* brad. Try making an argument that isn't backed by religous beliefs and maybe people would take you seriously. Save the religous information for a religous conversation. O and F.Y.I. I know this because Kendra gets mad at me for bringing religion into things so...stop and think because you make others who use their religous knowledge look bad.

Man in his natural state is evil. When we are born we have a sinful nature and cannot completely fight it off. Circumstances and family life can contribute to actions and choices but we still have a evil human nature. This discussion is bound to involve religion because even if you don't believe anything that is a religion and the question of mans inherent goodness is deeply rooted in religion so...... because of mans sin we are all born into evil nature and the only reason Jesus wasn't sinless was because he didn't have a biological father and so the only way to get rid of our sinful nature is to trust Jesus to save us. That's the theological argument and that is what I believe about human nature

Michelle said...

I believe that man is his natural state is good. and that the tempatations of society determine whether this person will be good or evil. This also depends on how strong the person's morals are.

justin said...

Well i would have to say that man can be neither good or evil in a natural state. This is because of the fact that we are considered good when we help people and it does not benefit us and being bad is doing stuff that can hurt yourself and other people.

kirsten dutton said...

Evil. (Like i said in class) If everyone was good and pure we wouldn't need a government...

V.J. said...

i think man changes because man does both good and evil. i think rome has a good point. if your parnets are evil you probly will be evil to. but there are those good people that would do anything to help you so i think man has its ups and its downs...

Hollie said...

I think it would be evil. Because if everything was good there would be no such thing as evil. If everything was good government wouldn't exist and we wouldn't be the way we are today. Also i do not believe man has a natural state.

Tanner said...

Sorry about the last post
I was in a hurry and didn't check my sources and this is not the real theological argument so don't just take the things that i said without question and Jesus' not having a biological father is not what made him born without out sin it was because he was fully man but also fully God

Ben Waugh said...

After our discussion in class and reading through all the posts, i slightly have altered my opinion. I have changed my opinion to include the fact that evil is in this world and that man, when left to his own choices will do what is in his own best interest. To the society we live in today this is thought as an evil act. I no longer see it as whether man is good or evil, for those qualities can change definition with the different people applying them to issues. I see it more that man is inherently selfish and will do what ever it takes to improve his life. This is not completely true, but is for the majority of man.

i think we are all born both good and evil. i think that the world we live in and the families that raise us influence the way we look at life. but that doesn't mean we cant be different than our family, it just means our society influences you more than you think it would. if you look at our society and compare it to a society from 20-40 years ago...you have almost a completely different world...so actually "good and evil" could be completely different things now..so whose to say what is good, and what is imoral?

Man is born evil. But mans view point on good and evil is blurred by his own interpretations. What some believe as good, others with different beliefs and morals might see as pure evil.

I believe that the note could be pushed both ways. I am with Devin on the fact that men have done both good and evil things and that it is the mind set of different men. It starts in the home really! With strong natured parents that abide by the laws of the United States there is a very good chance that man is good.

Anonymous said...

Man is both good and evil, it depends on what situation we are in to see what we are at that time
